Lock and Dam #7

Crossing the Mississippi River between LaCrosse, WI and LeCrescent, MN, October 2011 on my way back from New Hampshire.

The dam was built in 1937 and underwent major rehabilitation from 1989 to 2000.

The lock and dam crossing the river

Close up.

Locks and dams were built on the Mississippi, not for flood control, but for river navigation and allows vessels to step up and down from one water level to the next.  The first Lock and Dam was built in 1917 at St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis.  I was fortunate to take a river boat cruise through the lock and dam at St. Anthony Falls many years ago.

You can find more information about the lock and dams of the Upper Mississippi River

Linking to Watery Wednesday

Thanks for stopping!  Always enjoy hearing from you.

Lovely shots of the Mississippi River. The locks are neat, it is a cool process, watching how they work. Great post, Barb!

hi Barb! I know my Dad would have loved these bridges. He built some in Utah in his day. (hug)

New Hampshire - you were in my neck of the woods! Locks and dams are fascinating - I remember watching a lock get changed in upstate NY once. These are really great photos!

Interesting photos Barb. That would be interesting to see the barges going through the locks.

I never knew the Mississippi had locks. We have a set of locks in Sault Ste Marie (we call it the Soo) in which the freighters go between Lake Huron and Lake Superior in the St Mary's River. Would love to see these in person one day. Stay warm Barb, Janice

My cousin lives in Metarie, La., so I have actually SEEN the Mississippi River in New Orleans. I know that's a far piece from where you shot this, but it's the same river! I haven't seen much in this world in person.

A very interesting bit of Mississippi River information! I have heard the water levels have been suffering this past year due to drought. The water is so blue! Very pretty!

Great shots. I still have a hard time thinking about the Mississippi River all the way up there. I was going to post another dam this week too. Not copying you, I promise! :)

My husband has just finished reading a book about the lower Mississippi 1927 floods. He'll be interested to see these photos and read more about the upper Mississippi. Do you hail from New Hampshire?

Isn't that where they're having problems w/ Asian jumping fish? I saw something on How States Got Their Shapes a couple weeks ago, I think that's where I watched it, & they showed fish literally jumping out of the water & into their boats... the sound of the boat motor irritates them & they jump trying to get away from it.

Beautiful views! Thank you for joining, Barb =)
