Great Faces, Great Places, South Dakota

That is the slogan for the South Dakota tourism.  Here are the great faces.  Well I can't say the one in front is so great. :-)

This is what you see when you walk in from the parking lot.  It is known as the Avenue of Flags   representing the 50 states, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A closer look a the faces.

This shot was taken at night during the lighting ceremony.  It was very impressive.  They showed a short video of how the faces were carved into the mountain. Afterwards they called all the service men and women in the audience to come down and give their name and which branch of the service they served in.  There were about 40 people who came down.

You can read about the history of Mt. Rushmore here .

I will be showing more pictures from the Black Hills and the Bad Lands as I get them edited.

Thanks for all your kind comments on my last post.  Have a great week and I'll see you next time.

Barb

I think the one of your face is great! Happy and smiling. Such a fascinating process on those carvings. Your photos are so amazing and well-lit, especially since it was night.

Yours is a lovely, kind face! As for the others, it is a rather remarkable feat to have those faces carved in the mountains. I'll have to look at the link you provided, Barb.

Nice photos. So glad you were able to take the trek. My brother wanted us to meet them there. I declined when I saw that it is an 11.5 hour drive from our house. Yikes!

Lovely photos of Mt. Rushmore, and all the faces look great! I haven't been to Mt. Rushmore since I was a child--more years ago than I like to think about, and I imagine everything but the faces themselves is very different. It's on our list of places to visit.

I think that is a nice face out front! And I hope you got to cheer/clap for the service men in some way...that was a wonderful way to do the ceremony.

Thanks for sharing these photos and information about Mount Rushmore, Barb! On a family trip out that way several years ago, my (then) husband was antsy and only let us get out of the car and look at the faces from the parking lot! I am looking forward to seeing more of your photos from your trip.
